At some point we have to come together as a community and decide just how much longer we’re going to let goofy food trends run. First, it was sushi burritos. Fast-casual restaurants popped up all over the place serving giant-sized uncut maki rolls and calling them burritos. Although some of these monstrous creations offered unique ingredients—and it should be noted, pretty much every sushi burrito we tried was tasty—we should all be able to admit we got tricked into eating something we were told was new and special.
In July, sushi burrito favorite Jaburritos introduced sushi cupcakes, creating a resounding WTF. But before you freak out, please understand there’s no cake involved—the “cupcakes” are built with rice and fish in a baked wonton shell.
Now, Jjanga Steak & Sushi, a southwest Japanese restaurant that already boasts a gigantic menu including all-you-can-eat sushi and hibachi specials, brings us the sushi burger ($9), with a bun molded out of sushi rice and fillings including spicy tuna and crab with seaweed salad, eel with avocado or cucumber, or a cooked option of Korean-style bulgogi beef slathered in yum-yum and eel sauces. You can upgrade your sushi burger by requesting a panko breadcrumb crust on your rice bun, which adds a nice extra layer of texture to these oversized bites.
Sushi burritos, cupcakes and burgers could very well disappear as quickly as they arrived, flash-in-the-pan food gimmicks. Or maybe not. Maybe we love sushi so much we’re willing to put up with the silliness, even if only for the sake of our Instagram feeds.
